The Norris Commons, located in the heart of Norris, was certified as a Level 1 arboretum in 2018 by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. A Level 1 arboretum is required to have at least 30 species of trees within the defined arboretum area, be open to the public, properly protected, and well maintained. The trees must also be labeled with their common and scientific names. There were 36 species of trees on the Commons at the time of initial certification. The Tree Commission has planted enough additional species since then to meet the Level 2 requirement of 60 species and is in the process of being recertified at this higher level.
