Honor tree sponsors pay the cost of purchasing the tree and an identifying plaque listing the names of the sponsor, honoree, and species of tree. The cost of the tree varies according to the type of tree and its size. The plaque is either mounted to a stake or fastened to the trunk of the tree, depending on the size of the tree. Sponsors consult with the Tree Commission to determine the type of tree and the tree planting location. Locally native trees are strongly preferred, although non-native and non-invasive flowering trees are acceptable in some locations. Both the species and potential size of the tree at maturity vary according to conditions at the preferred planting location. Final approval of both the species of tree and planting location rests with the Tree Commission. |

Once the tree species and planting location are determined, the Tree Commission will purchase and plant the tree. Alternatively, the sponsor may acquire the tree and arrange for it to be delivered to the planting location. The Tree Commission will then plant the tree and notify the sponsor and designated individuals of the planting date and location. Once planted, the Tree Commission will mulch and water the tree for up to two years. Trees are usually planted between late fall and early spring. Newly planted trees may be enclosed by fencing to minimize damage by lawn mowers and deer. The Tree Commission regularly monitors and, as necessary, prunes honor trees throughout their life. If the tree dies within the first year following planting, the Tree Commission will usually replace the tree at no cost to the sponsor. |
